A small seed can grow to have a large impact in a community. Recently the Keweenaw Community Foundation announced it will manage a new fund, that will support a community garden in Houghton.
The Pewabic Street Community Garden was established by Houghton residents in 2007 as a volunteer led effort to create space for families, residents, students, and neighbors to share in the experience of growing food and cultivating a thriving garden. In 2010 Pewabic Street Gardens began partnering with youth and school programs. The Pewabic Street Green Future Fund will support the community garden by stabilizing funds for improvements and repairs.
Elena Busova, Director for the Pewabic Street Community Garden, says the area of the city allows residents to engage in healthier, and cross generational connections through the food we eat every day. The Keweenaw Community Foundation says the Pewabic Street Community Garden Green Future Fund will meet increasing demands of the garden space, offer educational outreach opportunities, and community programming, sustaining the gardens for future generations in Houghton.
