In high school volleyball last night…
- Hancock got past Houghton in five hard-fought sets 3-2 (25-22, 23-25, 25-18, 19-25, 15-13). For the Gremlins, Ellie Hainault recorded 9 kills, 1 ace, and 7 blocks; Lydia Williams 10 kills, 10 assists, 2 aces, and 2 blocks; Emmy Pietila: 31 digs and 3 aces; and Katia Rudak: 25 digs and 2 aces.
- Calumet swept Marquette 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-23).
- Jeffers fell 3-1 (25-13, 25-23, 18-25, 25-19) to Wakefield-Marenisco.
- Ewen-Trout Creek v Bessemer – no report.
- Forest Park dispatched Munising 3-1 (25-13, 25-20, 20-25, 25-16).
At the Westwood Invitational cross country meet yesterday…
- Jeffers claimed the boys’ team title, with Houghton second. Cameron Anderson of the Jets was the top individual finisher. Teammate Landon Larson was third, and Houghton’s Benjamin Hemmer fourth.
- Houghton easily won the girls’ team crown, with Sela Niska, Holly Cooke and Norah Woodruff placing first, second and third.

- Houghton plays at Calumet. Coverage will begin around 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3. It’s Calumet’s homecoming game. The parade will step off at 6:00 on Mine Street, and travel through town to Agassiz Field.

- L’Anse hosts Bark River-Harris.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell visits North Central.
- Ontonagon welcomes Ironwood.

Northern Michigan’s hockey team begins its campaign tomorrow and Sunday at the University of Massachusetts.

The Michigan Tech volleyball team plays at Lake Superior State tonight, and Saginaw Valley State tomorrow.
The Northern Michigan volleyball squad competes at Saginaw Valley State tonight, and Lake Superior State tomorrow.
College Soccer
The MTU women’s soccer team welcomes Saginaw Valley State tonight, and Wayne State tomorrow.
The NMU women’s soccer team hosts Wayne State tonight, and Saginaw Valley State tomorrow.
The NMU men’s team plays at St. Cloud State Sunday afternoon.
College Football
The Michigan Tech football team resumes its campaign tomorrow at Wayne State.

MLB
The Tigers advanced to the American League Divisional Series with a 6-3 victory over the Guardians yesterday. Dillon Dingler broke a 1-1 tie with a solo home run in the sixth. Detroit broke the game open when Cleveland intentionally walked Kerry Carpenter to load the bases in the seventh, preferring to pitch to Wenceel Pérez, who has been in a batting slump. Perez made them pay with a two-run single. RBI singles by Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene completed a four-run inning. An error by Will Vest led to two Guardians runs in the eighth, but he closed out the game with no further damage.
The Tigers took the Wild Card series 2-1, and will open their Divisional series at Seattle tomorrow night. Coverage will begin at 8:10 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Yankees blanked the Red Sox 4-0, and will open the other Divisional series at Toronto tomorrow afternoon.
The Brewers will host the Cubs in their Divisional series beginning tomorrow afternoon. Chicago advanced with a 3-1 win over the Padres in game three of their Wild Card set.
The Dodgers visit the Phillies in the other National League Divisional game tomorrow evening.
NHL
The Red Wings spotted the Maple Leafs an early goal, then came back to claim a 3-1 preseason victory last night. DylanLarkin, Alex DeBrincat and Emmitt Finnie scored. Cam Talbot stopped 18 shots.
The Wings host the Maple Leafs for another preseason contest tomorrow.
NFL
In last night’s NFL contest, Eddy Pineiro’s 41-yard field goal in overtime lifted the 49ers to a 26-23 victory over the Rams.
The Lions visit the Bengals for a 4:25 game Sunday.
The Packers have this week off.
