High School
At the Ewen-Trout Creek Invitational cross country meet yesterday…
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City won the boys’ team title. Ironwood was the only other school with enough runners to qualify. Neko Reed of the Blue Bolts finished first individually, followed by Jack Ruonovaara from the Copper Island Academy.
- L’Anse claimed the girls’ crown, with Ewen-Trout Creek second and Chassell third. Bree Besonen from Ewen-Trout Creek took individual honors, with L’Anse’s Princess Pierre second.
Houghton, Hancock and Jeffers will be among the teams competing at Westwood today.
In high school volleyball tonight…
- Hancock plays at Houghton. Coverage will begin around 6:10 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
- Calumet travels to Marquette. Coverage will begin around 5:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.

MLB
The Guardians erupted for five runs off Troy Melton and Brant Hurter in the eighth inning to claim a 6-1 victory over the Tigers yesterday. Detroit’s only run came in the fourth inning, when Riley Green scored on a Javier Báez single. Zach McInstry was tagged out at third base on a disputed play to snuff out the rally.
That American League Wild Card series is tied at a win per team, and will be decided this afternoon. Jack Flaherty will start against Slade Cecconi. The start time has been moved back from 1:08 to 3:08. Coverage will begin at 2:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
In other Wild Card games…
- The Yankees shaded the Red Sox 4-3. That series is tied 1-1.
- The Padres blanked the Cubs 3-0. That set is tied 1-1. The winner will take on the Brewers in the next round.
- The Dodgers dispatched the Reds 8-4. Los Angeles wins that series 2-0, and will face the Phillies in the next round.
NHL
The Red Wings play another preseason contest at Toronto tonight.
NFL
In tonight’s NFL contest, the 49ers visit the Rams. Coverage will begin at 7:30 on 99.3 The Lift.

Running
There are two opportunities to stretch your legs and view the fall colors this weekend.
Registration for the Jeffers 5k/10k Run/Walk will open at 7:30 at the high school, and is a fundraiser for the Jets athletic program. Participants will be bused to the starting points at the South Range ball fields, where the events will begin at 9:00. For additional information and online sign-up, click here.
The Keweenaw Color Run is a fun, untimed 5k run/walk that raises money for the Keweenaw Young Professionals. It starts at 9:30 at the Houghton Pier, with a course along the Portage waterway. Participants will be blasted with color at various times during the event. The Downtown Houghton Fall Fest will follow the race, from 11:00 until 2:00 at the Pier.
