Helga Baum went to be with her Lord and Savior on September 28, 2025 after a short illness.
Helga loved the outdoors, she loved walking many miles a day on the shores of Lake Superior, Swedetown, or the Michigan Tech Trails with her dogs no matter the weather. She picked thousands of rocks, agates, driftwood, and walking sticks over the years and met many friends on Tamarack Waterworks from her daily walking on Lake Superior. She was taught to swim before she was one and continued to swim several days a week at Soumi/Finlandia and Tech pools. Helga loved her many dachshunds that she bred and raised over the years. She also took care of her friends’ dogs (Kelly & Brad) for many years.
Helga was a member of North Point Church of Calumet and a longtime listener and supporter of VCY America.
Helga made so many friends in her 20+ years in the Copper Country that she loved dearly. She never lost her German accent or her love for Jesus. She always brought cookies, chocolate, or nisu to her friends, doctors’ offices, or banks.
Helga is preceded in death by her parents Jost and Hanna (Gosch) Metzler, her husband Melvin Baum, and her brother Yoko Metzler.
She is survived by her daughters Patricia (Chris) Prairie and Sabrina Child, sister Sabine Stuermann and niece Anett, and grandchildren Michael and Alana Prairie.
Helga had many special friends that will miss her deeply. She was very thankful for everyone who knew her, loved her, and helped her over the years including, Tom at Torch Lake Service for her car care, the Hyrkas family for furnace care, Abe Supply for lawn mower and snowblower care, Mike Krans and Riutta for chimney service, the Turnquist family for supplying wood every year, Dr. Glenna who took great care of her dogs, Twins Grooming, Amy and Superior National Bank staff, Pat’s IGA staff, her Tamarack Waterworks family (Kerrie, Bill, Teri, Terry, Janis, Doug, Mary Jo, Phillip, Larry, and Gordie, and others), her many friends at the Michigan Tech pool, North Point Church friends, Dr. Bonnie Hafeman and staff for the many house calls during the last few months of her life, Dr. Evonich and staff, Dr. Janners and staff, Dr. Coccias and staff, Dr. Jenny and the wound care team at Aspirus, Kelly Engle and family, Brad King and family, the Rundman family, the Salmela family, Roy and Janine Pikainen, Jane Zutter and family, Jerry and Karen Keranen family, Matt and Heather Nagel family, Craig and Gail Ongie family, Jim and Beegu Keranen family, Jacky and Larry Monette family, Laurie Outinen family, Kerrie Peterson, and Bill Blewett.
