There are many factors that can lead to an individual’s choice to commit suicide. Knowing the signs of when someone struggles with suicidal thoughts or ideation is important to caring for our communities. Copper shores victim advocate Callisto Cortez says anyone can become depressed or get to a point where no other option seems possible. But it’s always important to remember no one deals with suicide or depression by themselves.
That is where sometimes we find people feeling more isolated, feeling more alone. And so when we can break down those barriers, we can break down that stigma against mental health, that can make it a little bit easier for people to maybe feel less self-conscious. Maybe they have the confidence to talk to other people and connect with other people. Maybe they join that sport they’ve been looking at joining. Maybe they join that class or that community activity to then start socializing and building that sense of community for themselves. – Callisto Cortez, Suicide Prevention Walk Organizer, Copper Shores Community Health Foundation
On Saturday copper shores will host the copper country’s annual suicide prevention walk. While at Kestner park the foundation has invited other area non-profits to share various resources and information about programs or services that can help someone feel connected to the rest of the community. Building a network of close and supportive friends and family takes work. The annual suicide prevention walk with copper shores offers an inviting space where people can connect and develop relationships beyond Saturday.
