In high school volleyball last evening…
- Houghton downed Jeffers 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-14). Mia Nordstrom had 8 kills for the Jets, and Aya Keteri led the team with 14 digs.
- Calumet dispatched West Iron County 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-19). Hear the game replay here.
- Ewen-Trout Creek got past Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 3-1 (20-25, 25-17, 27-25, 23-12). Kiera Isaacson led the Blue Bolts with 15 kills, 13 service points, 23 digs and 5 assists. Aubrey Karppinen added 10 kills, Sylvie Kentala had 28 assists and Kallie Heinonen had 15 digs.
- Forest Park clobbered North Central 3-0 (25-6, 25-8, 25-7).
Jeffers plays at a tournament at Ashland tomorrow.
The Houghton boys soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Kingsford last evening. The soccer team plays at Sault Ste. Marie tomorrow.
At Houghton’s Bill Fezzey Cross Country Invitational yesterday…
- The Gremlins took the girls team title, with L’Anse a distant second. Calumet was third, followed by Ewen-Trout Creek, Hancock, Ironwood, and West Iron County. Houghton claimed the top five individual finishes, with Tessa Rautiola first, followed by Sela Niska, Jovie Williams, Holly Cooke and Romi Mattson.
- Jeffers won the boys team title, edging out the Gremlins by a point. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City was third, and Hancock fourth. The Jets and Gremlins combined to take 13 of the top 16 positions, with Jeffers’ Cameron Anderson first, and Houghton’s Xavier Hutchinson second.

College Football
The Michigan Tech football team improved to 2-0 with a 45-9 romp at South Dakota Mines last night. The Huskies held the Hardrockers to just four yards rushing. Tech opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game by blocking a punt and recovering the ball in the endzone. Alex Bueno passed for 151 yards and two scores. He also ran for a touchdown. Drew Collins scored on two short touchdown runs.
Northern Michigan’s football team plays at Northland tomorrow afternoon.
College Soccer
The Northern Michigan men’s soccer team played to a scoreless draw with Northwood yesterday. The men host Lawrence Tech tomorrow.
The NMU women’s team entertains Saint Cloud State this afternoon, and Cedarville University tomorrow.
Michigan Tech’s women’s soccer team welcomes Minnesota-Duluth tonight.
College Volleyball
The NMU volleyball team opened its season with a 3-1 (17-25, 25-21, 25-24, 25-16) victory over Wheeling University at the SpringHill Suites Invitational in Pensacola yesterday. Play continues today, as the Wildcats face Spring Hill College this morning, and Southwest Minnesota State tonight. They’ll wrap up with a game against West Florida tomorrow morning.
The MTU volleyball team opens play at the McKendree Classic with games against Missouri-Saint Louis this morning, and Southwestern Oklahoma State this evening. The Huskies will take on McKendree tomorrow afternoon.
MLB
The Tigers had yesterday off, and welcome the White Sox tonight. Jack Flaherty will start against Shane Smith. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers lost 2-0 to the Phillies yesterday. Freddy Peralta struck out eight over five shutout innings. That extended his streak of scoreless innings to 29 – the second-longest run in team history. Philadelphia picked up a run off Toias Myers in the seventh, and another off Joel Payamps in the ninth.
The Brewers visit the Pirates tonight. Quinn Priester will pitch against Johan Oviedo.
NFL
The NFL season opened last night with the Eagles taking a 24-20 victory over the Cowboys.
The Chiefs and Chargers play a rare Friday game in São Paulo, Brazil, tonight.
The Lions open their season at Green Bay in a 4:25 game Sunday, with coverage on the Voice of the Lions, 99.3 The Lift.
The Packers have signed punter Daniel Whelan to a contract extension. Details have not been released.
Veteran quarterback C.J. Beathard has inked a deal to join the Lions’ practice squad.
