Troy Melton tossed seven shutout innings, as the Tigers shut down the Diamondbacks 6-1 last evening. Melton scattered five hits, struck out five, and walked none to earn his first major league win. Andy Ibáñez and Dillon Dingler homered.
The Tigers entertain the Diamondbacks again tonight. Casey Mize will face Brandon Pfaadt. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Ibáñez was called back up from Toledo to fill in for centerfielder Parker Meadows, who has been placed on the injured list with a right quad strain.
The Tigers will play the rest of the regular season without starting pitcher Reese Olson. Olson suffered a strained shoulder during his most recent bullpen session, and has been placed on the 60-day injured list. There is a chance he could be ready to return for the playoffs.
Utility player Ryan Kreidler has been recalled from Toledo, but is only expected to be with the team a couple of days, until Paddack is activated.
With starter Jackson Jobe also done for the season, Detroit filled the gap by trading for Minnesota starter Chris Paddack. Paddack has struggled this season, with a 3-9 record and a 4.95 ERA in 21 starts. He will be a free agent at the end of this season. The Tigers also got Randy Dobnak in the deal. He has been assigned to Toledo. Detroit gives up 19-year-old catcher Enrique Jimenez, who was ranked as the team’s 14th-best prospect. Paddack is scheduled to start tomorrow night’s game for Detroit.
The Brewers downed the Cubs 8-4. Jacob Misiorowski gave up three runs in the first inning, but settled down and pitched through the fourth. Milwaukee responded with four runs in the third inning, then added solo homers by Andrew Vaughn in the fifth and Sal Frelick in the sixth, and a two-run shot by Christian Yelich in the seventh.
