In September, Visit Keweenaw and Michigan Aurora Chasers plan to host the first Great Lakes Aurora Dark Sky Jamboree for four days and three nights. Throughout the year, residents of the Keweenaw Peninsula and visitors to the Copper Country look to the skies at night in search of dancing lights during each solar storm.
The region welcomes the aurora borealis. Generally, northern lights shows tend to be stronger in the spring or in the fall, when the sun may have stronger, more frequent geothermal storms, and the Earth’s position in its orbit around the sun provides optimal hours of dark sky conditions.
During GLAD JAM, participants will enjoy a variety of presentations related to the science of the aurora borealis and low-light photography. The weekend will also include guided hikes, stargazing, workshops, and activities.
The jamboree will begin on September 11th. Those interested in learning more can find details here.
