College Basketball
The Lake Superior State men’s basketball team ended its NCAA Tournament run with a 98-85 loss to Dallas Baptist University in the quarterfinals yesterday. The Lakers led by a point at halftime, but were outscored by 14 in the second half. Devin Womack led LSSU with 20 points.
NHL
The Red Wings dropped a 5-2 decision to the Avalanche last night. J.T. Compher scored early, but the Avs reeled off four straight goals to take control. Austin Watson netted Detroit’s other tally late in the game. Alex Lyon made 23 saves.
Cam Talbot was supposed to have started last night’s game in goal, but was a late scratch. With Petr Mrazek also injured, Detroit called Sebastian Cossa up from Grand Rapids as an emergency backup.
The Wings host the Senators tomorrow.
NBA
The Pistons blasted the Spurs 122-96 last night. Cade Cunningham missed another game because of a left calf contusion, but six of his teammates reached double figures in scoring, led by Marcus Sasser’s career-best 27 points. The win moved Detroit’s record to 41-32, guaranteeing at least a .500 mark for the season for the first time since 2018-19.
The Pistons welcome the Cavaliers Friday.
The Bucks visit the Nuggets tonight.
MLB
The Tigers closed their exhibition season with a 4-3 loss to the Giants last night. Justyn-Henry Malloy homered. Jackson Jobe gave up two runs over four innings, and struck out five. Casey Mize surrendered two runs over three innings, and struck out seven.
The Tigers open the regular season Thursday against the Dodgers in Los Angeles tomorrow night. Tarik Skubal will start against Blake Snell. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers begin their regular season tomorrow against the Yankees in New York. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Carlos Rodón.
