High School
The girls high school basketball tournament continues with quarterfinal games tonight.
- Division Four – Ewen-Trout Creek (25-1) will face Saint Ignace (25-1) at 7:00 at Gladstone High School. The winner will face either Byron Center Zion Christian or Concord in the semifinals Thursday.
- Division Three – Calumet (21-5) will play Sanford Meridian (23-3) at 7:00 at Manistique High School. The winner will take on either Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest or Sandusky in the semifinals Thursday. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
- Division Two – Gladstone (24-2) will play Frankenmuth (22-4) at 7:00 at Cheboygan High School. The winner will meet either Goodrich or Tecumseh in the semifinals Friday.
College Basketball
Grand Valley State advanced to the quarterfinals the NCAA women’s basketball tournament by eliminating Ashland 62-50 last night. Teams will be reseeded before the tournament resumes next Monday.
Lake Superior State State will play Missouri-St. Louis in a men’s Division II regional final tonight.
NHL
The Red Wings will visit the Capitals tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons smothered the Pelicans 127-81 last night. Cade Cunningham scored 24 points, and Simone Fontecchio added 23 off the bench as every Detroit player saw action.
The Pistons visit the Heat tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 7:05 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Bucks visit the Warriors tonight.
MLB
The Tigers outscored half of the Pirates 9-6 yesterday. Reese Olson pitched into the fifth, and was charged with six runs on seven hits. Colt Keith had three hits and drove in two runs.
The Tigers face the Twins today. Matt Manning will start against Bailey Ober.
Jace Jung may be the Tigers’ third baseman of the future, but he won’t start the season with the team. After a weak showing this spring, Jung was assigned to minor league camp yesterday, and will open the campaign with Toledo. Reliever Sean Guenther was also assigned to the Mud Hens.
Longtime Tiger Kirk Gibson is retiring from the broadcast team. Gibson starred on the 1984 World Champion team. He’s 67 years old, and has been battling Parkinson’s disease. He heads a foundation that raises awareness and funds treatment and research for Parkinson’s.
The Brewers lost to the Padres 14-8 yesterday. Logan Henderson allowed four runs over three innings. Jackson Chourio had three hits.
The Brewers play the Mariners today. Elvin Rodriguez will pitch against Bryan Woo.
Milwaukee has confirmed that starter Tobias Myers will start the season on the injury list, with an oblique problem.
