Wintery conditions require people to embrace to cold and snow. Throughout winter Copper Country communities find ways to pass the time, and get the community outside with various events. From cross-country skiing races to a Finnish heritage festival, and a university campus full of huskies playing in the snow. Near the end of February Hancock hopes to introduce the latest winter event that will bring the Keweenaw peninsula residents down to Quincy Street. A snow sculpting invitational. During the third week of the month, Hancock will invite four teams of talented snow sculptors, including Scuplotra Borealis, to create fantastic art on the Quincy Green. On Friday the 21st, teams will arrive in town, and begin sculpting their creations all day on Saturday. On the third day of the competition, judges will deliberate and determine the best representation of the Copper Country’s love for winter. Hancock DDA coordinator Todd Gast says he hopes to bring more people downtown with winter-themed events, and the city is excited to showcase winter in the Keweenaw peninsula. During the contest, the Hancock Business Association also invites the community to take part in its sculpting competition and build a snowman on the green. The Snow Sculpture Invitational in Hancock will take place between February 21st to the 23rd and is free to attend.
