High School
Heikki Lunta has pushed back most of our local spring sports schedules, but the Lake Linden-Hubbell softball team was able to pick up a couple of lopsided wins down south in Coleman, Wisconsin Saturday. The Lakes took the opener 16-3. Payton Goldsworthy struck out 14 batters and hit a home run. Cleo Milkey had a homer and a single, and Jovie Daniles had three singles. Lake Linden claimed the nightcap 17-0. Goldsworthy struck out 11, and had two singles and a grand slam. Hailey Crouch had a double, and Sophia Hampton had a single.
College Hockey
Denver defeated Wisconsin 2- 1 to win the NCAA Division I hockey tournament title game Saturday. The Pioneers trailed 1-0 heading into the third period, but rallied to claim their 11th national championship, and third in the past five years.
NHL
The Red Wings were eliminated from the playoff race, following a 5-3 loss to the Devils Saturday. Emmitt Finnie’s goal early in the third period gave Detroit a 3-2 lead, but New Jersey responded with three straight to take the win. John Gibson made 28 saves, but took the loss in net.
The Senators blanked the Islanders 3-0, and claimed one of the two Eastern Conference wild-card playoff berths. The Bruins have locked down the other.
Detroit will close its season with two road games – Monday night against the Lightning, and Wednesday against the Panthers.
NBA
The Pistons wrap up their regular season at Indiana today. Coverage will begin at 5:35 on 99.3 The Lift. Detroit will be the top seed in the Eastern Conference when the playoffs begin later this week.
Milwaukee concludes its campaign at Philadelphia today.
MLB
Casey Mize sparkled as the Tigers stuffed the Marlins 6-1 Saturday. Mize pitched into the sixth, giving up a run on six hits. Drew Anderson held Miami hitless the rest of the way. Detroit struck early, with two runs in the first inning, and three on a mammoth Riley Greene homer in the third.
The Tigers host the Marlins again today. Tarik Skubal will start against Sandy Alcantara. Coverage will begin at 1:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Tigers have signed former Royals outfielder Tyler Gentry to a minor-league contract. He’s been assigned to Toledo to fill the gap created when Wenceel Pérez was promoted to Detroit to take the spot of the injured Parker Meadows. The Tigers have also claimed pitcher Grant Holman off waivers from the Dodgers. For the moment, he’s been assigned to Detroit’s FCL Lakeland farm team. To create room on the 40-man roster, Trey Sweeney was moved from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list.
The Brewers collected just two hits in a 3-1 loss to the Nationals Saturday. Kyle Harrison tossed four shutout innings, but left as Washington scored twice in the fifth, and took the loss. William Contreras’ ninth-inning homer provided Milwaukee’s only run.
The Brewers play at Washington again today. Brandon Woodruff will start against Zack Littell.
