Setting up students for a bright future means working together to offer kids opportunities to explore.
Next week, TRIO College Programs, MTU GEAR UP, and Breakwater Federal Credit Union will host the Bright Futures Fair at the Hancock Community Hub. The idea came out of a shared goal to provide local high school students with the knowledge they need to make the best decision for themselves when determining their future careers or academic journeys. GEAR UP College Access Gear Up Manager Gini Gesler says students will get to explore a range of careers they may have, or may not have already considered.
“Really connecting students with resources that are in the community to help them kind of navigate that on a one-on-one basis,” said Gini Gesler, CAS Manager for MTU Education Outreach. “We do run events throughout the year that have those things, but this is really more about a career exploration, seeing if maybe being a business owner might work for them.”
The Bright Futures Fair will begin at 6 p.m. on April 8 inside the Hancock Community Hub. Gesler said students will have opportunities to talk one-on-one with tech tutors to learn about studying skills, as well as having the chance to participate in an entrepreneurial exercise.
“I recommend coming a little bit earlier than eight, but yeah, you’ll be able to run through the simulation, stop by several different booths, but also visit tech tutors and talk with the TRIO pre-college programs,” Gesler said.
