High School
The Houghton High School hockey team is headed to the state quarterfinals. The Gremlins blanked Marquette 4-0 in Saturday’s quarterfinal game, holding the Sentinels to just 13 shots on goal. The game was scoreless until Gunner Gullstrand found the net two-and-a-half minutes into the third period. Connor Arko added to the lead a minute later, and Noah Maillette and Porter Markham tacked on late insurance tallies. Cooper Flachs got the win in net. Hear the game replay here.
Houghton will face Traverse City St. Francis in one state semifinal Friday at 11:00 at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth. Coverage will begin around 10:30 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97-7 The Wolf. The Gladiators advanced with a 4-0 victory over Freeland. Orchard Lake St. Mary’s will face University Liggett in the other Division Three semifinal.
At the Division Four state high school boys bowling singles championship in Taylor Saturday, Kyden Dean from the L’Anse team finished 47th out of a field of 56.
College Hockey
The 16th-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team closed its regular season with a 4-3 overtime loss to Bowling Green Saturday night. All of Tech’s goals came in the second period – from Teydon Trembecky, Max Koskipirtti and Carson Latimer. The back-to-back losses dropped the Huskies into fourth place in the final Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings. The Huskies will host Bowling Green next weekend in a best-of-three CCHA quarterfinal series.
The NMU hockey squad ended its season with a 3-0 loss to 18th-ranked Minnesota State Saturday. The win clinched the regular-season CCHA championship and the MacNaughton Cup for the Mavericks. The Wildcats finished last in the CCHA regular standings, and did not make the playoffs.
College Basketball
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams concluded their regular seasons with victories over Roosevelt Saturday.
The women’s team cruised past the Lakers 70-51. Alyssa Wypych scored 19.
The 16th-ranked men’s team clinched a tie for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season title with a 99-72 win. Ty Fernholtz sank a school-record 12 three-pointers, and led the team with 36.
The Huskies men’s team shares the regular-season crown with 18th-ranked Northern Michigan. The Wildcats got 41 points from Dylan Kuehl in a 98-75 victory over Parkside.
The Northern women’s team closed its regular season with a 65-56 win over the Rangers.
The GLIAC tournament opens Wednesday. Northern is the top seed on the men’s side, and will host eighth-seeded Ferris State. Tech has the number-two slot, and will entertain seventh-seeded Davenport at 5:30.
The Northern women’s team is seeded fourth, and will host the fifth-seeded Huskies in their tourney opener.
GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines lost to the Fond du Lac Bears 14-6 Saturday night.
The Portage Lake Pioneers had the weekend off.
NHL
The Red Wings lost to the Hurricanes 5-2 Saturday night. Patrick Kane and Moritz Seider scored. Cam Talbot took the loss in net.
The Wings visit the Predators tomorrow afternoon. Coverage will begin at 1:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons visit the Magic tonight. Coverage will begin at 5:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Bucks call on the Bulls this afternoon.
MLB
The Tigers routed the Rays 12-3 in a Grapefruit League game Saturday. Corey Julks and John Peck homered. Drew Anderson gave up four hits over three scoreless innings.
The Tigers will face the Blue Jays this afternoon. Tarik Skubal will start for Detroit. Coverage will begin at 1:00 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers lost a 9-7 slugfest to the Reds Saturday. Andrew Fischer homered for the Crew.
The Brewers play the Royals today. Chad Patrick will start.
Sled Dog Racing
Defending champion Mike Bestgen increased his lead during stage two of the CopperDog 120 Saturday morning. Bestgen opened the day with a 13-second advantage over Sarah Tarlton. He heads into this morning’s final stage with a 9:03 lead over former champion Jake Golton. Golton turned in the second-best run of the day to move up to second place. Tarlton fell back to third place, 16:42 off the pace.
Mushers in the 120 leave Copper Harbor beginning at 8:00 this morning, and should begin arriving at the finish line at the George Gipp Recreation Area in Laurium shortly before noon. Spectators are welcome. The CopperPull weight competition also wraps up this morning at the Gipp, with the final heat beginning around 10:00.
At the CopperDog 15 sprint in Copper Harbor Saturday, Golton took his second-straight title, scorching the icy course at an event-record 15.6 miles per hour. Seventy-seven-year-old Bob Lee finished second, and newcomer Ted Gerke placed third.
Kashton Beaber won the Junior CopperDart, averaging 14.3 miles per hour over the five-mile course. Sarah Anderson was second, just five seconds off the pace.
Danny Edmonson won Friday’s CopperDog 30, with Larry Fortier second, and Joann Fortier third.
