High School
Houghton and Marquette will meet in a state hockey tournament quarterfinal game tonight at 6:00 at the Berry Events Center at Northern Michigan University. Coverage will begin around 5:30 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97-7 The Wolf.
Boys basketball tournament district champions were crowned last night. In the only contest involving local teams, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City defeated Baraga 49-43. The Blue Bolts will face Wakefield-Marenisco in a regional semifinal Tuesday at 6:00 at Houghton High School. The Cardinals advanced with a 43-41 victory over Bessemer.
In the final girls regular-season basketball game last night, Hancock smothered Ontonagon 61-19.
At the Division Four state high school bowling tournament team championship in Taylor yesterday, the L’Anse girls team finished 14th of 16 competing teams. Kyden Dean from the L’Anse boys team will compete in the singles tournament today.
College Hockey
The 16th-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team dropped a 1-0 decision to Bowling Green last night. The loss dropped the Huskies into a three-way tie for second place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings with St. Thomas and Minnesota State. They’ll wrap up the regular season with a rematch against the Falcons tonight at 6:07 at the SDC.
The NMU hockey squad skated to a 2-2 tie at 18th-ranked Minnesota State last night. The Mavericks earned the extra CCHA standings point in a shootout. Kyle Bettens and Caiden Gault scored for the Wildcats. Those teams wrap up their regular seasons tonight in Mankato.
College Basketball
The Michigan Tech basketball teams conclude their regular seasons by hosting Roosevelt today – the women at noon, and the men at 2:00.
Both Northern Michigan teams entertain Parkside.
GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines fell to the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 8-7 in overtime last night. Matt Yeo had a hat trick. The Wolverines visit the Fond du Lac Bears tonight.
The Portage Lake Pioneers have the weekend off.
NHL
The Red Wings visit the Hurricanes tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons held off the Cavaliers 122-119 in overtime last night. Jalen Duren had 33 points and 16 rebounds. Cade Cunningham scored 25.
The Pistons visit the Magic tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 5:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Bucks fell to the Knicks 127-98 last evening. Myles Turner led Milwaukee with 19 points.
The Bucks visit the Bulls tomorrow afternoon.
MLB
The Tigers finally got their first Grapefruit League win of the spring, routing a split Phillies squad 16-8 yesterday. Javier Báez homered. Jack Flaherty gave up a run over two innings, and struck out four.
The Tigers will face the Rays this afternoon. Drew Anderson will start for Detroit.
Detroit pitcher Troy Melton has been diagnosed with elbow inflammation, and will likely not be ready for the start of the regular season.
The Brewers dispatched a split White Sox squad 5-2 yesterday. Luis Rengifo homered.
The Brewers face the Reds today.
Sled Dog Racing
Defending champion Mike Bestgen holds the lead after the opening stage of the CopperDog 120 last night – but it’s a slim margin. Bestgen finished 13 seconds ahead of Sarah Tarlton in the race from Calumet to Eagle Harbor. Former champion Jake Golton is 2:36 off the pace, and Rita Wehesler is 3:54 back. Stage two will begin this morning at 8:00 in Eagle Harbor, with mushers heading through Keweenaw County to Copper Harbor.
CopperDog weekend continues today. The CopperDog 15 sprint and the CopperDart race for junior mushers will begin at 2:00 in Copper Harbor. The CopperPull weight competition will take place at the Gipp Recreation Center in Laurium, with the first heat at 10:00 this morning, the second at 6:00 this evening, and the third at 10:00 tomorrow morning.
