High School
Houghton and Marquette will meet in a state hockey tournament quarterfinal game tomorrow at 6:00 at the Berry Events Center at Northern Michigan University. Coverage will begin around 5:30 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97-7 The Wolf.
Boys basketball tournament district titles will be decided tonight. In the only contest involving local teams, Baraga will play at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City at 6:00 for the Division Four, District 98 crown. Dollar Bay school officials are cautioning that there is limited parking at the school – they’re encouraging carpooling, and asking fans who live nearby to walk instead of drive.
Dollar Bay-Tamarack City has been named Team of the Year in the Copper Mountain Conference. Liam Tourtillott was named Player of the Year, and Jesse Kentala of the Blue Bolts Coach of the Year.
Local players joining Tourtillot on the Elite Team include Daniel Connor from Baraga, and Sam Lee from L’Anse. Copper Country Division First Team honorees also include Josh Daavettila from Lake Linden-Hubbell and Caleb Kentala from Dollar Bay-Tamarack City. Ontonagon’s Jack Nelson was named to the Porcupine Division First Team.

In girls regular-season basketball last night…
- Houghton got past Ishpeming 62-57. Ellie Hainault had 17 points and 16 rebounds for the Gremlins. Mia Lawson had 11 points, and Kate Filpus 10. Janessa Eagle netted 31 for the Hematites, and Mya Hemmer added 17.
- Calumet stuffed West Iron County 57-28.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell lost to Ewen-Trout Creek 62-21.
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City fell to Ontonagon 40-33.
- L’Anse dispatched Ironwood 65-44.
The girls regular season concludes tonight, as Hancock entertains Ontonagon. The Bulldogs will honor the 1997 girls team that went 24-3, and finished as state Class C runners-up.
The state high school bowling tournament finals will be held this weekend…
- In Division Four at Skore Lanes in Taylor, the L’Anse girls will compete as a team. Kyden Dean from the L’Anse boys team qualified individually.
College Basketball
The Michigan Tech basketball teams split their games against Parkside last night.
- The women lost 61-46. Ella Mason led the Huskies with 10 points.
- The men pulled out a 68-65 victory. Marcus Tomashek’s three-pointer at the buzzer won it for the Huskies. Tomashek led all scorers with 27 points.
The Huskies wrap up their regular season by hosting Roosevelt tomorrow – the women at noon, and the men at 2:00.
Both Northern Michigan teams won their games against Roosevelt last night.
- The women cruised to an 89-58 victory. Jacy Weisbrod netted 23 points.
- Dylan Kuehl scored 36, as the men claimed a 100-87 win.
The Wildcats entertain Parkside to conclude their regular campaign tomorrow.
College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team caps off its regular season with home games against Bowling Green tonight at 7:07, and tomorrow at 6:07.
The NMU hockey squad ends its regular season at Minnesota State tonight and tomorrow.
GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines visit the Fox Cities Ice Dogs tonight, and the Fond du Lac Bears tomorrow.
The Portage Lake Pioneers have the weekend off.
NHL
Dylan Larkin’s second goal of the game lifted the Red Wings to a 2-1 overtime victory over the Senators last night. John Gibson made 26 saves.
The Wings visit the Hurricanes tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons welcome the Cavaliers tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Bucks entertain the Knicks this evening.
MLB
The Tigers are still looking for their first Grapefruit League win, after falling to the Orioles 6-5 yesterday. Eduardo Valencia and Carson Rucker homered for Detroit. Keider Montero gave up two runs over three innings.
The Tigers will face the Phillies this afternoon. Jack Flaherty will start for Detroit. Coverage will begin at 1:00 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers defeated a split Rangers squad 5-1 yesterday. Tyler Black had a single, a double and a triple.
The Brewers face a split White Sox squad today.
Sled Dog Racing
CopperDog weekend begins tonight with the start of two races. Mushers in the three-stage CopperDog 120 will begin leaving the gate in downtown Calumet at 7:00. Mushers in the single-stage CopperDog 30 will follow. The 30 will end tonight in Eagle Harbor. Opening ceremonies on Fifth Street will begin at 6:30. Tomorrow, two additional races will be staged in Copper Harbor – the CopperDog 15 sprint, and the CopperDart race for junior mushers.
