High School
On the opening night of the boys district basketball tournament…
- Division Four, District 97 at Bessemer – Ewen-Trout overpowered Watersmeet 64-10. The Panthers will face Bessemer in tomorrow’s first semifinal. Wakefield-Marenisco will play Ontonagon in the other.
- Division Four, District 98 – Lake Linden-Hubbell advanced with a 64-59 victory over Chassell. Josh Davettila had 29 for the Lakes, Blake Lebo had 12 and Bentley Rozman added 10. Brayden Larson had 27 for the Panthers, Dayne Tarvis had 15 and Luke Tarvis added 11. The Lakes will host Dollar Bay-Tamarack City tomorrow at 6:00 in one semifinal. Baraga plays at L’Anse at 6:00 in the other.
- Division Three, District 65 – Jeffers held off Calumet 40-39. The Jets built an 11-point lead midway through the second quarter, but the Kings’ came back to take a brief lead in the fourth. After Levi Kinnunen sank two free throws to give Jeffers a four-point advantage in the closing seconds, Andrew Juntilla’s three-pointer with two seconds remaining pulled the Copper Kings to within one, but the Jets prevented a final shot. Landon Larson paced the Jets with 21 points. Levi Kinnunen added 11, including a half-court three-point buzzer-beater at the end of the third quarter. Owen Loukus led the Copper Kings with 11. Jeffers will play at Westwood tomorrow at 6:00 in one semifinal. Hancock lost to Ironwood 53-28. The Red Devils will play at West Iron County tomorrow in the other semifinal.
- Division Two, District 33 – Houghton shaded Escanaba 49-48. The Gremlins will play at Kingsford in one semifinal tomorrow at 6:00, with coverage at 5:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf. Gladstone plays at Negaunee in the other.
In regular-season girls play last night…
- Calumet smothered Gwinn 67-32. Bailey Strom led the Copper Kings with 19 points.
- Jeffers fell to Wakefield-Marenisco 51-47.
- Baraga smothered Ontonagon 74-25.
On the girls schedule tonight…
- Houghton welcomes Ewen-Trout Creek.
- Hancock entertains West Iron County. The Bulldogs will honor the 1997 girls team that went 24-3, and finished as state Class C runners-up.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell hosts L’Anse.
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City welcomes Wakefield-Marenisco.
- Jeffers entertains Westwood.
- Baraga visits Bessemer.
- Forest Park travels to North Central.
At the Division Two high school ski finals at Schuss Mountain yesterday, Houghton freshman Laura Lucak took third place in both the slalom and the giant slalom. See full meet results here.
College Basketball
The Michigan Tech basketball teams split their games at Ferris State last night.
The women fell to the 16th-ranked Bulldogs 62-45. Alyssa Wypych scored 11 to lead the Huskies.
The 12th-ranked men’s team used a strong second half to turn back the Bulldogs 79-68. Marcus Tomashek scored 27.
NHL
The Red Wings return from the Olympic break Thursday when they visit the Senators. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons’ five-game win streak ended with a 114-103 loss to the Spurs last night. Jalen Duren led Detroit with 25 points and 14 rebounds.
The Pistons host the Thunder tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 7:05 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Bucks welcome the Heat tonight.
MLB
The Tigers were held to just three hits in a 3-0 Grapefruit League loss to the Twins yesterday.
The Tigers will face the Braves this afternoon.
The Brewers dropped a 7-5 Cactus League contest to Padres yesterday. Andrew Vaughn and Brandon Lockridge homered. San Diego broke the game open with six runs in the eighth inning.
The Brewers face the Athletics today.
