Michigan Technological University students will take the stage Thursday evening in “Proof,” a Tony Award-winning drama that explores genius, family legacy and mathematical brilliance.
The production at the McArdle Theater represents another milestone for director Nich Radcliffe, who has guided several impressive shows featuring university students this academic year.
“I’m gonna tell you what I always tell you, man, they’re ready and it’s a great show. I’m super impressed,” Radcliffe said. “They came in and they worked like pros.”
Cast members worked over an expediated rehearsal schedule, preparing the production in five weeks instead of the typical seven-week process. Radcliffe noted the students’ exceptional dedication during the compressed timeline.
“They all did a ton of work over their holiday break and they were off book, you know, about 10 days after we started rehearsal as opposed to the usual like three weeks after we start rehearsal,” he said. “And that’s when the work of the actor really begins is when you get that dang book out of your hand.”
Written by David Auburn, “Proof” premiered on Broadway in 2000 and won both the Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The story follows Catherine, a mathematical genius who must prove her father’s intellectual legacy while attempting to control the narrative surrounding his work.
Radcliffe expressed enthusiasm about audience reactions to the student performances, particularly how the cast members have developed their characters.
“It’s been wonderful to see how students have taken on roles and made them their own,” he said.
The production opens Thursday at 7:30 p.m., with additional performances Friday and Saturday at the same time. All shows will be held at the McArdle Theater on the Michigan Tech campus.
