MLB
Pitchers and catchers take to the field for the first time today at the Tigers’ spring training camp in Lakeland, Florida. Detroit opens its Grapefruit League exhibition season a week from Saturday.
Starter Justin Verlander is rejoining the Tigers. Verlander has agreed to a $13 million contract, with $11 million deferred. Verlander spent the first 13 seasons of his Hall-of-Fame career in Detroit, before being traded to the Astros, where he pitched for current Tigers manager A.J. Hinch. He spent last season with the Giants, struggling in the first half with injuries, but finishing strong. He will be 43 when the season begins.
The move was prompted in part by the announcement that one Tigers starter will miss the entire season. Reese Olson recently underwent shoulder surgery. Yesterday, he was placed on the 60-day injured list, along with Jackson Jobe, who is recovering from Tommy John ligament replacement surgery.
