High School
In high school hockey last night…
- Hancock upended Houghton 6-5 to win this year’s Wing Ding match. Kirby Storm gave the Bulldogs an early lead. Connor Arko responded for the Gremlins before Ted Heinonen’s shorty put Hancock on top 2-1 at the end of the first period. After Luciano Paoli added to the lead early in the second period, the Gremlins appeared to take control, with consecutive goals by Jack Sayen, Mason Soli and Kade Jenkins giving them a 4-3 lead heading into the third frame. Hancock struck back, reclaiming the lead with tallies by Tyler Axford and Brady Axford. Arko’s second goal of the night re-tied the contest, but Storm netted the game-winner with just under four minutes remaining. Adam Mikkola earned the win in net. The Gremlins outshot the Bulldogs 40-27.
- Marquette scored three times in the third period, and blanked Calumet 3-0. The Kings outshot the Sentinels 24-14. Beau Jukuri gave up two goals. The third was an empty-netter.

- Calumet fell at West Iron County 67-40.
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City outscored L’Anse 77-61.
- Chassell lost to Bessemer 65-41.
- Ontonagon fell to Wakefield-Marenisco 84-54.
- Ewen-Trout Creek lost at Florence 70-29.
On the girls schedule…
- Calumet downed Escanaba 42-35.
- Baraga shut down Jeffers 43-19.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell defeated Ontonagon 60-46.
College Hockey
Max Koskipirtti’s goal in overtime lifted the 20th-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team to a 3-2 victory over 16th-ranked Augustana in the opening game of the Winter Carnival series last night. Tom Leppa put the Huskies up early with a goal in the opening minute. The Vikings quickly tied the game, then grabbed the lead in the second period. Jack Anderson’s goal early in the third tied the game, and set up the overtime. Owen Bartoszkiewicz earned the win in net, as Tech outshot Augustana 39-20.
The Winter Carnival series wraps up tonight at 5:07.
College Basketball
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams host Saginaw Valley State today – the women at noon, and the men at 2:00.
Both Northern squads entertain Lake Superior State today.
NHL
The Red Wings are off until February 26th because of the Olympics break.
NBA
The Pistons smothered the Knicks 118-80 last night. Daniss Jenkins came off the bench to lead Detroit with 18 points. The Pistons visit the Hornets Monday. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
Jenkins has been playing for Detroit on a two-way contract, which allows the team to shuttle him back and forth with their Motor City Cruise G-League squad. Last night was his 50th game with the Pistons, which is the season limit of that type of contract. Team officials say they plan to promote him to a standard contract this weekend to keep him on the roster.
The Bucks turned back the Pacers 105-99 last evening. Kevin Porter, Jr. scored 23.
Milwaukee plays at Orlando Monday.
NFL
The Patriots face the Seahawks in the Super Bowl tomorrow night. We’ll join coverage at 4:00 tomorrow afternoon on 99.3 The Lift.
