From outside of the region, the Keweenaw Peninsula might seem like a relaxing and sleepy place to stop on vacation. But those living and working in the region have started waking up to the incredible projects, businesses and people making the Copper Country a wonderful place to settle down.
The annual Sparkplug Awards with the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce, KEDA, Copper Shores, Keweenaw Young Professionals and the MTEC SmartZone recognizes the accomplishments of the community over the past year. Chamber Manager Katie Schlief says it’s always a festive evening with a lot of smiles, tears and plenty to celebrate.
“We want the younger generations to love it here, stay here or come back home. So it’s just getting those (accomplishments) out there. Knowing that good things are happening here in the Keweenaw. Anything from manufacturing, to producing, to growth. I mean it’s like every day that it’s happening here in the Keweenaw. So just making sure that we have our eyes on those projects throughout the year. So we can keep them in our memory for when this comes up, and nominations do open,” Schlief said.
The Sparkplug Awards nominations committee will officially close nominations at 3 p.m. next Wednesday, Feb. 11. Those interested in nominating a person, organization or business for a Keweenaw Sparkplug Award can find details for how to submit a nomination online.
The Sparkplug Awards will take place inside the Memorial Union Ballroom on Michigan Tech’s campus. Individual tickets will cost $60. A group of eight can reserve a table for $440.
