City of Houghton Beautification Committee
The University of Michigan Dearborn’s iLabs recognize the city of Houghton for continuing efforts to support entrepreneurs. The recent eCities study conducted by the iLabs researchers honored Houghton with a five-star rating. The accomplishment sets Houghton among 86 other communities in the state to earn the five-star rating.
Community and Business Development Manager Danielle Perkowitz says the recognition reflects the community’s entrepreneurs, and many residents and businesses who invest in Houghton’s future every day. By supporting small business growth with streamlined permitting, responsive service, and close collaboration with business owners, Houghton attracts talented individuals with a Business and Creative Incubator. By investing in public spaces and infrastructure, and through partnership with Michigan Technological University, the city strengthens the pipeline between college life and settling into a career, while maintaining a stable environment for business growth.
The eCities study conducted by the iLabs team at U-M Dearborn analyzed publicly available documents from over 275 communities across 54 of Michigan’s counties between 2020 and 2024. The study was produced to track how communities increase their capital assets while maintaining important functional assets the community relies upon. The study found the communities that participated represent 86 percent of Michigan’s real commercial property and 63 percent of the state’s total property value.
