High School
In high school hockey last evening…
- Kirby Storm’s goal in overtime gave Hancock a 2-1 victory over Negaunee. Connor Rajala gave the Miners a first-period lead, but Luciano Paoli tied the contest in the second period. Isaac Johnson earned the win in net, as the Bulldogs outshot the Miners 18-9.
- Jeffers cruised past Kingsford 6-0. Tage Rajala’s power play goal late in the opening period was the eventual game-winner. Max Nordstrom added an insurance tally in the second frame, and the Jets broke the game open in the third with goals by Bryce Maki, Cameron Anderson, Brogan Turner, and Rajala’s second of the game. Kasen Helminen got the shutout in goal.
In high school boys basketball last night…
- Houghton shut down Calumet 66-24. The Gremlins held the Copper Kings to just 9 points in the first half. Alex Hebert led Houghton with 21 points, and Terrance Nolan added 17.
- Hancock got past Gwinn 41-34.
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City smothered Chassell 70-25. Liam Tourtillot paced the Blue Bolts with 25 points, and Baron Colbert added 18. Braydon Larson scored 16 for the Panthers.
- Baraga outscored Wakefield-Marenisco 57-49.
- Ontonagon dispatched Ironwood 72-54.
- Ewen-Trout Creek v Watersmeet – no report.
- West Iron County lost to Kingsford 67-30.
On the girls schedule…
- Houghton fell to Marquette 55-40. Kate Filpus had 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Gremlins. Avery Osborne led the Sentinels with 25 points.
- Calumet lost to Negaunee 59-45.
- Jeffers downed Lake Linden-Hubbell 62-48. Isabelle Rajala, Karissa Rautiola, and Kylee Kangas each scored 13. for the Jets, and Mia Nordstrom added 11.
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City fell to Wakefield-Marenisco 60-21.
- L’Anse dumped North Dickinson 60-32.
- Ewen-Trout Creek overpowered Watersmeet 83-12.
- Forest Park defeated Munising 53-29.
- West Iron County fell to Kingsford 45-30.

The Houghton High School swim team split with Marquette yesterday. The boys fell 95-81, while the girls took a 104-80 victory – their first in head-to-head competition against the Sentinels since 2017.
- On the boys side, Gunnar Carlson and Tate Evans both qualified in the 200 freestyle. Isaac Neva qualified in the 50 freestyle.
- On the girls side, Evelyn LaTendresse won the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly. Kayleigh Dart took the 100 freestyle, Aya Keteri the 500 freestyle, and Ahri Olson the 100 breaststroke. The girls also won the 200 and 400 freestyle relays with the
team of Aya Keteri, Lydia Williams, Evelyn LaTendresse and Kayleigh Dart.
The Houghton Alpine ski team competed at Marquette yesterday. Laura Lucak took third place in the slalom and fourth place in the giant slalom.
NHL
The Red Wings visit the Utah Mammoth tonight. Coverage will begin at 8:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons held off the Nuggets 124-121 last night. Cade Cunningham had 29 points and 10 assists. Jalen Duren had 19 points and 13 rebounds.
The Pistons welcome the Wizards tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Bucks outscored the Bulls 131-115 last evening. Kyle Kuzma had 31 points and 10 rebounds.
The Bucks entertain the Pelicans tonight.
The Pistons have sent guard Jaden Ivey to the Bulls as part of a three-team deal. In exchange, Detroit gets Kevin Huerter and Dario Saric from Chicago. Huerter is one of the league’s better three-point shooters, although his production has fallen off this season. Saric has seen little action the past couple of seasons. The Pistons and Timberwolves will also swap their first-round picks in the upcoming NBA Draft, which should move Detroit up a bit.
Nordic Skiing
This year’s Copper Country Barneløpet will be held Saturday at the Maasto Hiihto trails. The Barneløpet will include non-competitive races for kids ages 3 through 17. To get more information or sign your kids up in advance, visit skitigers.com.
Fishing
The annual Winter Carnival ice fishing tournament sponsored by the Fishing Club at Michigan Tech will be held Saturday on Chassell Bay. Fishing will be open from 8 until 3. The entry fee is $25. For more details and online sign-up, click here.
