During the winter, Copper Shores’ Meals on Wheels keeps seniors eating nutritious meals, even when the roads don’t allow the program’s drivers to get out to the furthest seniors.
Program Director Jessica Mills says the emergency packs are an essential part of the Meals on Wheels program in Houghton County, especially when winter storm alerts or power outages can happen at a moment’s notice.
“We make sure there’s two fruits and something for the seniors to drink as well with their meals. We always like to make sure that there’s two meals in one bag. That way, if it’s a multiple-day closure or emergency, they’re set until we can reach them the next time,” said Jessica Mills, program director for Copper Shores Meals on Wheels. “A lot of times if schools are closed, we’re also going to be closed and those are when we ask our seniors to please watch out on social media, news, radio for those closures and to hear when to use their emergency bags.”
The emergency packs provided by Copper Shores can cover a senior’s meals for up to two days. Mills says in the case that winter storms extend beyond the emergency pack plan, the program has team members ready to prepare additional emergency meals.
The emergency packs can stay on the shelf for up to one year and contain all of the nutrients a senior will need to tackle the day. Those interested in learning more about Copper Shores’ Meals on Wheels can find information online.
