Take your time driving. Law enforcement agencies in the Copper Country wish to remind travelers to prepare for the winter weather before hitting the road headed to work or appointments. The very low temperatures and accumulated snow have made roads throughout the Upper Peninsula slick to drive on.
Check the weather before you leave and know the route to where you are going. Do not exceed the speed limit. Especially when roads are slick, law enforcement says, drivers should keep a speed that weather conditions allow, so slow down and prepare for curves in the road. If your vehicle does begin to slip on the road, do not panic. Adjust the steering wheel in the direction the vehicle is sliding, and slowly renegotiate the direction of the vehicle.
If your vehicle does get stuck in a snow bank, assess the health and safety of passengers before you assess the vehicle for potential damage from the accident. Carry a shovel and cat litter in your vehicle. AAA suggests cat litter as an alternative to road salt, as cat litter can allow tires to regain traction. Opposed to further melting the snow and ice around the vehicle, potentially allowing it to sink further in the snowbank. A small shovel can come in handy when attempting to remove your vehicle from a snow bank if it is not buried too deep.
If your vehicle is stuck, call a local tow service, AAA, or law enforcement for assistance. Remain in your vehicle until assistance arrives. Additionally, during the winter drivers may want to consider keeping an emergency blanket or clothing in the car, snacks and water, as well as a first aid kit. Houghton Police additionally wish to inform the community the department has responded to several accidents on US-41 and M-26 highways. Please proceed on the road with caution.
