High School
In high school hockey Saturday…
- Houghton stopped Grandville 4-1. The Bulldogs grabbed an early lead, but that was the only one of their 24 shots that got past Brycyn Nettel. Brody Donnelly tied the game late in the first period. Gunner Gullstrand scored twice in the second period, and Noah Maillette capped the scoring in the final minute of the game.
- Nathan Londo’s 23rd goal of the season late in the second period lifted Calumet to a 3-2 victory over Hancock. All of the rest of the scoring came in the opening period, with the Copper Kings getting goals from Erik Loukus and Brady Boberg, and the Bulldogs from Nolan Hanner and Connor Helminen. Beau Jukuri got the win in net, and Adam Mikkola suffered the loss, as Calumet outshot Hancock 33-27.

College Hockey
The Northern Michigan hockey team upended 19th-ranked Michigan Tech 3-2 at the SDC Saturday night. The Huskies outshot the Wildcats 44-37, but managed only a first-period goal by Elias Jansson and a very late tally by Teydon Trembecky. In between, NMU got one goal from Tobias Pitka and two from Matthew Argentina to earn just their second victory of the season. Owen Bartoszkiewicz took the loss in goal, and Oliver Auyeung-Ashton earned the win.
College Basketball
Ella Mason scored 21 points, as the Michigan Tech women’s basketball team buried Purdue Northwest 73-46 Saturday. The Huskies put the game away by outscoring the Pride 26-9 in the third quarter.
The 6th-ranked Tech men’s team built a 16-point halftime lead, and dispatched Purdue Northwest 83-65. Gabe Smith had 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Marcus Tomashek added 15 points.
The 16th-ranked Northern Michigan women’s team sank 15 three-pointers, and blew past Wayne State 91-71 Saturday. Sarah newcomer paced the Wildcats with 22 points, and Jacy Weisbrod added 21.
The 13th-ranked NMU men’s squad breezed past Wayne State 83-62. Jackson Dudek netted 21 points.
GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers blasted the Sun Prairie Killer Bees 10-4 Saturday, and remained unbeaten.
The Calumet Wolverines couldn’t climb out of an early hole, and fell to the De Pere Deacons 5-4 Saturday.
NHL
The Red Wings welcome the Kings tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons outscored the Kings 139-116 yesterday. Cade Cunningham had 29 points and 11 assists. The game got testy in the closing minutes, with Detroit’s Ron Holland II ejected after he shoved Kings guard Keon Ellis to the floor.
The Pistons visit the Nuggets tomorrow.
The Bucks-Mavericks game was postponed after the Dallas team plane was grounded because of the weather. No make-up date has been announced.
The Bucks visit the 76ers tomorrow.
NFL
The Super Bowl opponents are set.
- In the snow in Denver, the Patriots got past the Broncos 10-7 to win the AFC title.
- The Seahawks outlasted the Rams 31-27 to claim the NFC crown.
New England and Seattle will meet in the Super Bowl February 8th, with coverage on 99.3 The Lift.
