UPSET drug enforcement officers have arrested an Ontonagon man in connection with transporting methamphetamine into the county.
The Michigan State Police Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team obtained information several weeks ago on a person in Ontonagon County suspected of transporting large amounts of crystal meth to the area.
Detectives, working with MSP’s Traffic Safety Team, observed a vehicle belonging to the suspect traveling in Gogebic County. A Michigan State trooper initiated a traffic stop near Watersmeet, where officers arrested 50-year-old Ontonagon resident Justin Diem, who became combative during the stop.
An MSP K-9 unit was brought to the scene and alerted that substances may be inside the vehicle. During a search of the automobile, troopers discovered a .45 caliber handgun, evidence of drug distribution and 11 pounds of methamphetamine.
Through further investigation, officials discovered the suspect had ties to Florida, where the drugs were obtained and transported to Ontonagon County. Detectives also seized $653 in cash.
Diem has been lodged at the Gogebic County Jail on charges related to resisting and obstructing police, felony firearm possession and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.
Michigan State Police UPSET was assisted by the DEA, Ontonagon County Sheriff, MSP Wakefield and the Lac Vieux Desert Tribal Police.
