Heikinpaiva’s excitement has been building since mid-December. Many people have joined heritage classes at the Finnish American Folk School. Others stopped by Sew Cranky to participate in the Snowflake Challenge. And this past Friday, some families met at the Finnish American Heritage Center to dance and play games at the Hobby Horse Hoedown.
“Yes, I choose dances for this event that anybody can do, old and young. I’m getting a little out of breath,” said Ginger Alberti, organizer of the Hobby Horse Hoedown. “Anybody can do, they can follow along. As you can see, people jumped in and joined that weren’t really dancers of this sort, but they had fun. And they are getting introduced to the music and the beat, and all that is part of dancing.”
Excitement will continue to build up to Saturday when the Copper Country will celebrate the halfway point of winter and the bear rolling over. Join the Calumet Theatre on Friday night for Club Finndigo’s screening of “Fallen Leaves,” a 2023 romantic comedy directed by Finnish filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki, also known for his film “Leningrad Cowboys Go America.”
The parade on Saturday will begin at 11 a.m. and the passing of the symbolic Finno-Ugric “tsirk,” commemorating Hancock’s designation as the Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture in 2026.
