The students have set down drills and soldering tools. The final second has taken its last tick. And Michigan Tech’s Copper Country Robotics team has completed the three-day robot challenge. Team member David Reeves says it was a busy couple of days, fueled by energy drinks, an all-night work session and plenty of interaction with the local community over a livestream.
“I think we had a lot of time to experiment with it, which is good. We’ve definitely had to pull documents from different places and figure out what is the best way to display them. But I think overall it works well,” Reeves said. “We’ve had lot of interaction with the community. They seem to be seeing our documents, which is really good and basically serves our goal for this competition. And then there’s also just a huge kind of after scene in the Robot in Three Days community where different organizers kind of recommend the best robots to look at or the things to look out for. And so we’re hoping that we can make an impact in that community as we had a slight impact last year.”
Each competition season varies slightly from the prior year. Reeves adds Copper Country Robotics hopes to have a very competitive season and looks forward to seeing what other college teams came up with over the past three days. But at the end of the 72 hours, Copper Country Robotics is most excited to see what local high schools’ teams will build, influenced by their engagement with the college team during the challenge.
