A fun activity brings families and children together in Hancock next week. On Jan. 16, Heikinpaiva hosts the Hobby Horse Hoedown, a unique sport that brings more Finnish culture to the community.
While not nearly as competitive as some events found in Finland — and even here in Michigan — next Friday’s hoedown will have music, dancing, a steeplechase, and games for attendees.
For those unaware of the activity, hobby horsing includes individuals “riding” a stick with a horse head on it while going through equestrian obstacle courses.
“We set up a steeplechase, which is basically the images of doing actions on the floor. So nobody’s actually jumping hurdles that are stepped up off the ground. They’re jumping over markers on the floor. Flat markers. But the kids love following the pattern. It’s like doing miniature golf with a horse,” said Ginger Alberti, co-chair of Hobby Horse Hoedown.
Hobby Horse Hoedown co-chairs Ginger Alberti and Kay Seppala say the event has seen more than 80 riders at the dance in past years. Those interested in learning more about the event can find more information online.
The Hobby Horse Hoedown will begin at 6 pm at the Finnish American Heritage Center in Hancock. The event will cost $5 for a family. Alberti says doors will open at 5:30 pm, so people have time to get settled in. If you do not have a hobby horse, organizers say the event will have a limited number available for use.
Additionally, Seppala says for those new to Finnish heritage, the Hobby Horse Hoedown offers a great introduction to the music and dances often performed by the Kivijat Dancers throughout the year. The Thimbleberries will entertain the crowd during the Hobby Horse Hoedown, providing the event’s folk music.
