High School
In high school hockey Saturday…
- Houghton spotted Forest Hills Central an early goal, then roared back to claim a 5-1 victory. Jack Sayen tied the game 9 seconds into the second period. Noah Maillette netted the game-winner 34 seconds later, and Braden Kari added an insurance tally late in the period. Maillette and Kari each scored an additional goal in the third period. Brycyn Nettel made 19 saves.
- Calumet shaded Brighton 2-1.
College Hockey
In the consolation match at the Desert Hockey Classic in Tempe, Arizona, on Saturday, Jack Anderson’s hat trick powered Michigan Tech to a 5-0 victory over Alaska Anchorage. Teydon Trembacky scored twice for the Huskies, who outshot the Seawolves 39-25. Owen Bartoszkiewicz earned his second shutout of the season in net.
Arizona State won the title, with a 5-2 victory over Air Force.
Lake Superior State took the early advantage in the Cappo Cup series, with a 2-1 victory over Northern Michigan Saturday night. Caiden Gault scored the Wildcats’ only goal. Oliver Auyeung-Ashton made 28 saves. The total-goals series concludes tonight in Salut Ste. Marie.
College Basketball
The fifth-ranked Michigan Tech men’s basketball team recovered from Friday’s tight loss to Grand Valley State and pushed past Davenport 77-68 Saturday. Josh Terrian scored 18, giving him 37 points for the weekend. Nate Abel and Gabe Smith each finished with double-doubles, with 14 points and 12 boards for Abel, and 11 points and 12 rebounds for Smith.
Alyssa Wypych scored a career-best 24 points, as the MTU women’s outscored Davenport 71-65. Janie Tormanen added 20 points, and grabbed 11 rebounds.
The Wildcats men’s team won their 12th straight, taking a 72-60 victory over Grand Valley. Dylan Kuehl scored 25 points, giving him 58 for the weekend. Cal Klesmit added 21.
The NMU women’s team was held to just 22 points over the middle two quarters, and lost to top-ranked Grand Valley 78-66. Addison Pytleski scired a career-high 18 points.
GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines fell 8-5 at Eagle River Saturday night.
NHL
The Red Wings lost to the Penguins 4-1 Saturday, in a game that was closer than the score would indicate. Two of Pittsburgh’s goals were late empty netters. Alex DeBrincat scored Detroit’s only goal. John Gibson made 27 saves.

NBA
The Pistons visit the Cavaliers this afternoon. Detroit will be without Jalen Duren, who will miss at least a week with a sprained ankle.

The Packers wrap up their regular season today with a 1:00 game at Minnesota.
