Friends and associates are mourning the death of Hancock businessman and former State Representative Mike Lahti, who passed away Monday at age 80.
Lahti’s business career began when he opened a State Farm Insurance office in Hancock in 1968. He and his wife, Sharon, operated a number of businesses, including the Hancock Ramada Inn, and local laundromats and car washes.
Lahti’s property management and development company renovated the Scott Hotel in Hancock and the Morrison School in Calumet, turning them into apartments.
He also became involved in politics, serving on the Hancock school board, the Finlandia University board of trustees, and the Houghton County Commission. In 2006, he was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives, where he represented the 110th District for two terms.
A funeral service has been set for Saturday at noon at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hancock, with visitation beginning at 10:00. The O’Neill-Dennis Funeral Home is assisting with the arrangements.
