High School
Keweenaw Peninsula teams dominated the opening day of the expanded MacInnes Holiday Classic Saturday, but Mother Nature won Day Two.
Two of yesterday’s contests – Houghton v Livonia Stevenson, and Calumet v Capital City – were called off as the visiting teams left the Copper Country in advance of the incoming winter storm.
In the two games that were played yesterday…
- Brogan Turner scored six goals and added an assist, as Jeffers routed the Eastside Stars 8-1. Blake Haltunen and Tage Rajala also scored for the Jets. Kasen Helminen got the win in net, as Jeffers outshot the Stars 34-10.
- Hancock lost to De Pere 7-3.
To fill the schedule gap left by yesterday’s cancellations, a doubleheader has been scheduled for tomorrow at the SDC.
- Houghton will play Calumet at 4:00, with coverage beginning at 3:40 on KBear 102.3.
- Hancock will take on Jeffers at 6:00.
The girls high school basketball showcase set for the SDC today has been canceled because of the weather. Three of the games will be played on Wednesday – Wakefield-Marenisco v Forest Park at 12:30, Lake Linden-Hubbell v North Dickinson at 2:00, and L’Anse v Munising at 3:30. The Baraga-Norway game will be made up on a date to be announced.
College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team will play for the title at the Great Lakes Invitational Tournament today, following yesterday’s 5-2 victory over Miami of Ohio. Stiven Sardarian had a goal and an assist. Tom Leppa, Joe Prouty, Jack Anderson and Carson Birnie also scored for the Huskies, and Own Bartoszkiewicz made 26 saves.
Tech will face Michigan State in the championship game tonight at 7:00. The Spartans dispatched Ferris State 5-2 in yesterday’s other semifinal.
The Bulldogs and Red Hawks will play in the consolation match this afternoon at 3:30.
NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the 49ers outlasted the Bears 42-38. A final Chicago drive set them up at the San Francisco 2-yard line, but Caleb Williams’ pass into the endzone fell short as time expired.
The Rams visit the Falcons tonight, with coverage at 7:00 on 99.3 The Lift.
NHL
Simon Edvinsson’s goal 1:46 into overtime lifted the Red Wings to a 3-2 victory over the Maple Leafs last night. Moritz Seider and Mason Appleton also scored for Detroit, and Cam Talbot made 25 saves.
The Wings host the Jets Wednesday, with coverage at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons fell to the Clippers 112-99 last night. Cade Cunningham scored 27, and Jalen Duren had 18 points and 14 rebounds.
The Pistons visit the Lakers tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 10:05 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Bucks visit the Hornets tonight.
