High School
In high school hockey Saturday…
- Calumet fell to Hartland 3-1. Nate Londo’s goal early in the third period knotted the game 1-1, but the Eagles netted two goals in the final four minutes to claim the win. Beau Jukuri made 24 saves.
- Jeffers routed Negaunee 8-1. Brogan Turner had two goals and five assists for the Jets. Easton Therrian scored twice, and Ryan Turpeinen, Max Nordstrom, Cam Anderson and Matthew Rinkinen each scored once. Pierce Johnson made 16 saves.
- Houghton used a late surge to get past Trenton 5-4. The Gremlins outshot the Trojans 40-19, but trailed 3-1 heading into the third period, with their only score from Jack Sayen. Tallies by Brody Donnelly and Connor Arko tied the game. The Trojans quickly regained the lead, but Arko’s second goal of the game tied it back up, and Noah Maillette’s goal with 1:41 remaining was the game-winner. Cooper Flachs made 15 saves.
College Basketball
The ninth-ranked Michigan Tech men’s team bombed Lynn University 105-67 Saturday at the Florida Tech Christmas Classic. The Huskies set a new team record with 23 three-pointers. Marcus Tomashek had 11 threes, and set a new individual record. He finished with 39 points, and Ty Fernholz added 26.
The NMU men’s team completed a three-game sweep at the Puerto Rico Clasico with a 97-55 victory over UPR Bayamon Saturday. Cal Klesmit led the Wildcats with 23 points. It was Northern’s 10th straight win.
College Football
Ferris State University won its fourth NCAA Division II football title in five years, defeating Harding 42-21 in the nationall title game.
GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers thumped the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 8-4 Saturday.
The Calumet Wolverines fell to the Eagle River Falcons 9-2.
NHL
The Red Wings outskated the Capitals 5-2 Saturday. John Leonard scored his first Detroit goal 65 seconds into the game. The Wings took control with second-period scores by James van Riemsdyk, Elmer Soderblom and Moritz Seider. Washington responded with a pair of goals, but Dylan Larkin’s late empty-netter sealed the win. John Gibson made 24 saves.
Those teams will fly from Washington to Detroit for a rematch this afternoon, with coverage beginning at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons shut down the Hornets 112-86 Saturday night. Cade Cunningham had 22 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds. Jalen Duren had 19 points and 11 rebounds.
The Pistons play at Portland tomorrow night.
The Bucks visit the Timberwolves tonight.
NFL
The Packers couldn’t hold a late 10-point lead, and lost to the Bears 22-16 in overtime Saturday night. After Chicago recovered an onside kick, Caleb Williams threw a touchdown pass with 24 seconds remaining to force overtime, then hit D.J. Moore with a 46-yard scoring toss in the extra period. Packers’ quarterback Jordan Love left the game after a helmet-to-helmet hit in the second quarter, and Malik Willis finished the game. Team officials confirmed that Love suffered a concussion.
In Saturday’s earlier game, the Eagles stopped the Commanders 29-18.
The Lions entertain the Steelers in a 4:25 game today, with the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
