The Keweenaw Heartland project celebrates major milestone accomplishment in 2025. Since late 2022 The Nature Conservancy has been working closely with community partners and the public to prepare to transition the Keweenaw Heartlands to public ownership. As the local team begins to close out 2025, the Nature Conservancy recently shared some of the project’s accomplishments in the past year.
In 2025 the Keweenaw Heartlands gained the endorsement of Representative Greg Markkanen, who introduced amendments to state legislation that will help move the transition plan forward. A second milestone TNC celebrates includes generous support from conservation funds. In 2025 the Keweenaw Heartlands project earned the support of the Charles Stewart Mott Fund and the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation’s Kigme Fund that contributed one million dollars that helped secure a two million dollar fund.
Establishing the Keweenaw Heartlands fund through that two million dollars accomplished a third milestone, which ensures the long term stability to managing the nearly 32,000 acre property. The Nature Conservancy has worked with the Keweenaw Community Foundation to establish that fund in support of the project.
