Every snowflake is unique and intricately designed by nature. Sew Cranky’s snowflakes are also uniquely designed by the people celebrating Heikinpaiva ahead of the new year. Ginger Alberti, co-owner of the vintage restoration shop and semi museum, has organized the 2-month-long snowflake challenge for six years.
“Ours are the portable machines of the same era and you actually physically turn a crank while you sew and believe it or not, this actually makes sewing the easiest possible way to sew. You feel very much in control. It’s the first year, I think we had 68 participants and every year following that we’ve had over 100,” Alberti said.
Using hand-cranked sewing machines, participants can create snowflakes pulled from books or create their own designs, full of creativity. Ginger Alberti and Michael Sabo help people get started on the machines before turning over control to the artists. The Sew Cranky snowflake challenge with Heikinpaiva will run until Feb. 14. Stop by the shop during hours. Alberti does ask groups larger than six to call ahead. Four dollars will pay for the cost of materials. Participants can also be chosen as part of a random drawing over the course of the challenge. Learn more online.
