Michigan Technological University plans to centralize wellness services and programs with a $55 million gift from Chang K. Park. On Friday, the university announced plans to establish the Chang K. Park Student Wellness Center on campus, close to where many students live and administrative offices.
Officials say the generous donation supports the Michigan Technological University master plan that includes goals to improve student access to wellness services the institution has provided for many years.
“Or maybe in a classroom in Fisher Hall, or maybe it’s in one of the residence halls. And so the students don’t have a consistent place to go to receive that kind of programming that we’re trying to offer. So we really think that this is going to help us reach more students because they’re going to know where to go,” said Laura Bulleit, vice president of student affairs at Michigan Technological University.
“Student success isn’t just in the classroom. It’s the student success being an individual and preparing yourself for the world to come. What’s particularly impactful is that focus is going to be instantiated in the physical facility now in a way that in most universities it doesn’t happen,” said Richard Koubek, president of Michigan Technological University.
The university plans to build the new wellness center in the area of Lot 11, between the Memorial Union Building and the Administrative Building. Michigan Technological University expects to complete work on the Chang K. Park Student Wellness Center in 2028.
Park, a 1973 electrical engineering and engineering administration degree earner, has kept strong ties to his alma mater that served as a second home for the Korean native. He founded the URC Automation Company and has become a renowned philanthropist.
