The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community will have one new tribal council member and a new associate judge, following yesterday’s general election.
Two council seats from each district were up for grabs.
Unofficial results released by the KBIC show that both current council members for the Baraga district retained their seats. Everett Ekdahl, Jr. received 227 votes, and Rodney Loonsfoot collected 156. Patrick Racette finished just out of the running with 149 votes, and Bruce LaPointe had 123.
In the L’Anse District, incumbent Austin Ayres easily won reelection with 219 votes. Challenger Mathew Shalifoe, Jr. nosed out incumbent Jeremy Hebert 176-170. Brent Waranka received 102 votes.
In a tight contest for the associate judge position, Ariel Gougeon ousted incumbent Mark Smith 182-165.
Vote totals are considered unofficial until ratified by the KBIC tribal council.
