High School
In hockey last evening…
- Hancock couldn’t climb out of an early hole, and fell to Escanaba 6-5. Powered by Ben Sands’ hat trick, the Eskymoes carried a 6-2 lead going into the third period. The Bulldogs scored three short-handed goals early in the third, but couldn’t net the equalizer. Brady Axford had a hat trick for Hancock, and Kirby Storm and Connor Helminen also scored. Graham Johnson had Escanaba’s other two goals. Adam Mikkola made 23 saves for the Bulldogs.
- Calumet rebounded from Friday’s 6-1 loss to Escanaba, and mercied Jeffers 8-0. Nate Londo and Oskar Loukus each had hat tricks. Erik Loukus scored twice. Drake Niemela and Ben Anderson each had three assists. Beau Jukuri earned the win in net, as the Kings outshot the Jets 33-9. Hear the game replay here.
In girls basketball last night…
- Houghton opened its season with a 38-32 loss to Gwinn. The Gremlins fell behind early, came back to take some brief leads in the second half, but the Modeltowners held them off. Kate Filpus led Houghton with 11 points. Makayla Delmont and Adeline Derwin each scored 10 for Gwinn.
- Hancock v Dollar Bay-Tamarack City – no report.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell lost to Wakefield-Marenisco 59-29.
- L’Anse outscored Jeffers 60-37. Montanna Heinonen and Mia Nordstrom led the Jets with 8 points each.
- West Iron County shut down Iron Mountain 49-20.
In boys action last night…
- Baraga downed Chassell 67-50. Daniel Connor led the Vikings with 25 points, Joseph Fish added 15, and Easton Foucault chipped in 12. The Panthers’ Brayden Larson led all scorers with 27 points, and Luke Tarvis added 14.
- Forest Park dispatched Iron Mountain 54-33.
On the boys schedule tonight…

MLB
Reliever Kyle Finnegan will stay with the Tigers. Reports from baseball’s annual winter meetings indicate that he’s agreed to a two-year contract worth up to $10 million. Finnegan struggled in the first half of last season with the Nationals, but excelled after joining the Tigers in a deadline trade, posting a 1.50 ERA with a 34.8 percent strikeout rate.
