High School
In high school hockey yesterday…
- Escanaba scored early and often, and routed Calumet 6-1. Chase Korpi netted the first Eskymoes goal just 82 seconds into the contest, and Nick Martinson increased the lead several minutes later. The Copper Kings got one back when Lewis Nagel found the net early in the second period, but the Eskymoes took command, as Graham Johnson scored three straight, and Ben Sands added a final tally. Beau Jukuri stopped 23 of 29 shots for Calumet. Cully Hayes turned away 28 of 29 for Esky.
- Houghton pulled out a dramatic 2-1 victory over East Grand Rapids at the West Michigan Hockey Showcase in Grand Rapids. Brody Donnelly’s first period goal stood up until Trevor Bord tied the game early in the third period. In a final flurry following a power play, Noah Maillette pushed the puck across the line with 18 seconds remaining in regulation. The goal was initially waived off, but a replay confirmed it. Cooper Flachs earned the win in net.
- At Sault Ste. Marie, Jeffers came from behind to shade Byron Center 4-3. After Tage Rajala gave the Jets an early lead, the Bulldogs scored three straight. With less than three minutes remaining, Jeffers erupted with goals by Cam Anderson, Brogan Turner and Griffin Heinonen in a 26-second span to claim the win. Kason Helminen stopped 27 shots for the Jets.

In boys basketball last night…
- Calumet fell 58-45 to Wakefield-Marenisco. Owen Loukus scored 12 for the Copper Kings, and Andrew Junttila added 11. Garrett Prisbe of the Cardinals led all scorers with 18.

- Iron Mountain shut down West Iron County 52-25.
- Forest Park clobbered North Central 83-46.
College Basketball
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams play at Parkside today.
Both Northern Michigan teams play at Roosevelt.
College Hockey
The Northern Michigan hockey team earned its first win of the season, edging Bowling Green 3-2 last night. Caiden Gault, Girts Silkalns and Landon MacDonald scored for the Wildcats. William Gramme made 34 saves.
The Michigan Tech hockey team has the weekend off.
GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers mauled the Sun Prairie Killer Bees 19-0 last night. The Pioneers host the Fond du Lac Bears tonight at 7:30.
The Calumet Wolverines fell to the Bears 7-2 last evening, and entertain the Killer Bees tonight at 7:30.
NHL
The Red Wings visit the Kraken tonight. Coverage will start at 9:45 on KBear 102.3.
NBA
The Pistons outscored the Trail Blazers 122-116 last night. Cade Cunningham had 29 points.
The Bucks dropped a 116-101 decision to the 76ers last evening. With Giannis Antetokounmpo sidelined, Bobby Portis came off the bench to lead Milwaukee with 22 points.
The Pistons will host the Bucks tonight.
Team officials said yesterday that the calf injury Antetokounmpo suffered in Wednesday’s game could keep him ouut of the lineup for as long as four weeks.
NFL
The Packers host the Bears in a 4:25 game tomorrow.
The Lions have been hit with another injury. Reports say that defensive back Brian Branch has suffered a torn Achilles tendon, and will likely miss the rest of the season.
MLB
Drew Anderson is returning to the Tigers. Anderson signed a minor league contract with Detroit in the spring of 2024 after brief stints with the Phillies, White Sox and Rangers, and two seasons with the Hiroshima Toyo Carp. After a few appearances with Toledo, he was released and signed with a Korean team. There, he developed an additional pitch, and compiled a 2.25 ERA in 30 starts last season, averaging nearly 13 strikeouts per nine innings.
