Thanksgiving is right around the corner. While some families might head to the grocery store to prepare for the big feast, some others stopped by Faith Lutheran Church in Laurium on Saturday. Earlier this month, the Keweenaw Health Foundation partnered with the CLK Council of Churches and its Food Pantry to organize a drive-through Thanksgiving pickup. Pastor of Faith Lutheran Church Jared Howard says the event started a little early and was able to provide more than 300 frozen turkeys to families.
“We had a conversation, and they decided to help make a big impact here in this month with giving out free meals for those folks who might not be able to make ends meet with the cost of turkey skyrocketing, the cost of everything else. So it’s just a nice opportunity for us to take that stress off of people’s lives and just bless them with a meal this Thanksgiving,” said Jared Howard, pastor at Faith Lutheran Church.
The items also included the fixings for a full Thanksgiving feast, including stuffing, cranberry sauce, vegetables and items to make a delicious dessert. Howard adds that the CLK Pantry has been busier in recent weeks, and events like Saturday are just one way to fight food insecurity throughout the year.
