After a house fire, residents of the Copper Country take care of each other. For many years, the region’s first responders have organized a fund to support people and families in need after a fire or a criminal act. Houghton County Sheriff Josh Saaranen says the program works in immediate relief for victims, often helping find temporary housing.
“We have one main fundraiser throughout the year, which is the Pigs in Heat hockey game. Historically, that’s been our major fundraiser. This is the second year now that we’ve been teaming up with Copper Shores with the opportunity of being a part of Giving Tuesday. So those now are the two major areas where we’ll take in donations throughout the year. We’ll also receive some private donations just throughout the year from citizens, you know, families who, you know, sometimes give it back after, you know, after we’ve helped them,” said Josh Saaranen, sheriff at the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office.
In 2024, Copper Shores’ Giving Tuesday campaign raised $1,200 to support the Copper Country Police and Fire Relief Fund. The fund helps support victims of fires and crimes in Baraga, Houghton and Keweenaw counties. The annual Pigs ‘N Heat hockey game at John MacInnes Ice Arena typically happens during February.
