As residents in the Copper Country age, they might begin feeling the impacts of loneliness on their health. Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly has been an ear to listen and a friend that visits for more than 40 years in the Keweenaw Peninsula.
Executive Director Carol Korpala says the bimonthly visits to the organization’s forever friends can serve as more than a friendly face and good conversation. Those visits can often become a check-in for families living far away from isolated grandparents and parents.
“And so that’s why Little Brothers is here, is to provide that friendship. And then through that friendship, we provide service. So we’re providing non-emergent medical transportation. We’re providing personalized bags of food each month. We’re providing firewood to heat their homes. So all of these funds from the Giving Tuesday campaign is going to support all of that,” said Carol Korpala, executive director of Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly.
In 2024, Copper Shores’ Giving Tuesday campaign raised $144,000 for Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly. LBFE operates seven core programs including forever friend visits, non-emergency medical transportation, delivering groceries and meals, social events and holiday meal sites, firewood assistance, and providing medical equipment.
