James Gilmer was recently elevated to the rank of sergeant by the Michigan State Police. Gilmer grew up in Bergland and graduated from Ontonagon High School before attending Northern Michigan University. While at NMU, he began his law enforcement career in 1995 when he joined the Ontonagon County Sheriff Office. In 2000 he began working as a K-9 handler before he joined the Michigan State Police.
Gilmer is a graduate of the 119th Trooper Recruit School. He was first assigned to the Stephenson Post, and later was moved to the Detroit Freeway Post, Brighton Post, First District Headquarters, was a member of the HST Drug Interdiction Team. While serving near Livonia, Gilmer also served with the special investigations division as a part of the Marijuana and tobacco investigation unit.
Gilmer says an attractive aspect of the job when he first began his law enforcement career was the chance to do something different everyday, mixing desk work and operations in the field. But a larger draw was the opportunity to help people and give back to his community. He adds its been nice to return to the Wakefield Post and his home in the western Upper Peninsula.
