A group of Michigan Tech students turned their concern about food insecurity into action, raising $3,500 for the Western Upper Peninsula Food Bank through a community soup fundraiser.
Students organized a soup fundraiser last week, hosting the event at the Good Shepard Lutheran Church. The event came together as a response to growing uncertainty surrounding SNAP and food assistance programs affecting families across the region.
The student volunteers prepared 25 different types of soup for the fundraising event, generating $2,800 in donations. The effort demonstrated the power of community and collaboration, with leftover soup donated to the Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly meals program to ensure nothing went to waste.
Local businesses stepped up to amplify the students’ efforts. Louie’s Fresh Market and the Keweenaw Co-Op contributed additional funds, bringing the total donation to $3,500 for the food bank.
Morgan Haley-Gluesing, one of the student organizers, explained the impact of their fundraising success. In total the students were able to support up to a week’s worth of groceries for 25 families.
