High School
The Jeffers High School volleyball team will face Traverse City St. Francis in a Division Three regional title game tonight. The game has been moved from Newberry to Munising, and will begin at 6:00. We have added the game to our broadcast schedule, with coverage beginning at 5:40 on 97.7 The Wolf.
In other volleyball tournament action tonight involving Upper Peninsula teams…
- Forest Park will face Ishpeming at 7:00 at L’Anse High School for a Division Four regional title. Coverage will be provided by 99.1 WIKB.
- Newberry will face Atlanta for a Division Four regional crown at Pellston High School.
In high school football, Josh Daavettila from Lake Linden-Hubbell has been named Defensive Player of the Year in the Great Lakes Eight West Division. North Central was named Team of the Year. Gogebic’s Jayden Verrett was tabbed as Offensive Player of the Year, and Nick Heikkila of the Miners was honored as Coach of the Year.
Local players named to the All-Division first team offense include Tyler Axford from Lake Linden-Hubbell as a hybrid, Ryan Holmstrom from Ontonagon as a lineman, and Trent Kannich from Forest Park as a running back.
The second team offense includes quarterback Brady Axford, running back Josh Daavettila and lineman Travis Holbrook from the Lakes, along with receiver Jack Nelson and hybrid Brady Bobula from Ontonagon.
Local players on the first team defense include defensive backs Brady Axford from the Lakes and Dyceson Drew from the Gladiators.
The second team defense includes linebacker Tyler Axford from Lake Linden, along with hybrid Brody Bobula, linemen Ryan Holmstrom and Jack Nelson from Ontonagon, and Trent Kannich from Forest Park.

NHL
The Red Wings host the Ducks tonight. Because of NFL football, coverage will begin at 6:45 on KBear 102.3.
NBA
With Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren on the bench, the Pistons still cruised past the Bulls 124-113 last night. Paul Reed stepped up with 28 points and 13 rebounds, and Daniss Jenkins added 18 points and 12 assists in his first NBA start. Cunningham is nursing a hip contusion, and Duren has a sprained ankle. Neither is expected to be out long-term.
The Pistons entertain the 76ers in an NBA Cup game tomorrow night. Coverage will begin at 7:05 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Bucks fell to the Hornets 111-100 last evening. Ryan Rollins scored 25. Giannis Antetokounmpo missed the game with an achy knee.

To the surprise of no one, Tigers starter Tarik Skubal received his second straight American League Cy Young Award yesterday, receiving 26 of the 30 first-place votes. Paul Skenes of the Pirates claimed the National League honor.
The Tigers have claimed reliever Dugan Darnell off waivers from the Pirates. To make room on the 40-man roster, they designated reliever Alex Lange for assignment.
