Many residents in the Keweenaw Peninsula picked up the gift of warmth over the weekend at the CCAM and Salvation Army Coat the Copper Country free store. And already the groups are back to work preparing to give the gift of Christmas joy this holiday season.
Throughout the area during the next month, people will start seeing Salvation Army Angel Trees set up inside church halls, and Angel Mission Angel Trees at businesses and community spaces. The annual programs helps deliver Christmas gifts to children and families in need. CCAM board member Deb Siira says each year the program could not happen without incredible support from groups planting an angel tree in their place of business.
Once we close our registration there might be the last minute people that come in. I know Salvation Army has a toy store, but we also have supplies or items that we collect throughout the year. All new items or people who donate new items. And then we have those that people can come in and share from. Toys for tots made quite a large donation of toys last year. So if anybody is short on gifts or. Didn’t register on time, we have gifts that they can come and choose from. – Deb Siira, board member Copper Country Angel Mission
Siira adds Angel Trees in places of business bring joy to workers and customers. Creating a feeling of community and reminding people to help one another during a generous time of year. The programs are organized separately. The Copper Country Angel Mission’s registration forms can be filled out online or dropped off to the Calumet storefront. Salvation Army requests families registering for the Angel Tree program call or email Carol Plichta for more details (Find information at the bottom of this page). And the groups coordinate lists so families will receive gifts from one of the two organizations. Registration for families will remain open with the Salvation Army and Copper Country Angel Mission until December 1st.
In the coming weeks Angel Tree sites will see the Copper Country Angel Mission and Salvation Army elves out to set up sites. Between now and then, both organizations seek sponsors that will house an Angel Tree or pick up a Christmas list for a family. Those interested in contacting the Angel Mission should contact Deb Siira for more information.
