High School
The Houghton boys soccer team opened the district playoffs with a 4-0 victory over Boyne City yesterday. Ethan Heckle had two goals in the first half, and completed a hat trick with a penalty kick in the second half. Eli Garnell added a late goal, with an assist from Heckle.
The Gremlins will play again Tuesday, against the winner of today’s contest between Iron Mountain and Elk Rapids.
In high school football last night…
- Houghton couldn’t hold an early lead, and fell to Gladstone 34-22. Brayden Goudge opened the scoring with two dramatic plays – a 27-yard interception return for a touchdown, and a 67-yard scoring run late in the opening quarter. The Braves took over from there, scoring five straight touchdowns before Goudge finally closed out the scoring with an 8-yard run late in the game.
- Calumet’s game against Hancock was called off because the Bulldogs didn’t have enough healthy players to field a team. The Copper Kings won by forfeit.
- West Iron County outscored L’Anse 49-40.
- Ontonagon fell to North Central 66-36.
- Forest Park lost at Ironwood 64-42.

- Lake Linden-Hubbell welcomes Gogebic. The Lakes’ homecoming game will kick off at 1:30 at Warner Field.
In high school volleyball last night…
- Baraga pulled out a tight 3-2 (25-21, 21-25, 24-26, 25-19, 15-12) victory at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City. Kiera Isaacson led the Blue Bolts with 31 kills, 29 digs and 5 aces. Sylvie Kentala had 37 assists and 18 digs. Laila Bell had 10 kills and 6 digs, and Kallie Heinonen had 20 digs.

The Northern Michigan University volleyball team plays at Purdue Northwest today.

College Soccer
The NMU men’s soccer team upended 17th-ranked Saginaw Valley State 1-0 yesterday. Luca Rosen netted the game’s only goal.
The Wildcats host Davenport tomorrow at noon.
The Tech women’s soccer team plays at Northern tomorrow at 3:00.
College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team has the weekend off.
The NMU hockey team dropped a 5-2 decision at 16th-ranked Ohio State last evening. Peter Cisar and Michael Burchill each scored their first collegiate goals. Those teams play again this evening in Columbus.
College Football
The MTU football team welcomes Davenport today at 2:00.
Northern’s football squad entertains Grand Valley State today.
MLB
The Tigers’ season ended with a 15-inning 3-2 loss to the Mariners in game five of their American League Divisional Series last night. Tarik Skubal struck out 13 over six innings, allowing a run on three hits. Detroit took a brief lead with Kerry Carpenter’s two-run homer in the top of the sixth, but Leo Rivas’ pinch-hit RBI single off Tyler Holton tied the game in the seventh. Will Vest, Troy Melton, Keider Montero and Jack Flaherty held Seattle to just two hits over the next eight innings, until the Mariners plated the game-winner off Tommy Kahnle in the 15th.
Seattle will open the American League Championship Series tomorrow night against the Blue Jays in Toronto.
The Brewers and Cubs will decide their National League Divisional Series tonight in Milwaukee.
The winner will face the Dodgers in the National League Championship Series.
NHL
The Red Wings entertain the Maple Leafs tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons play their next preseason game Tuesday at Cleveland. Listen for selected Pistons broadcasts again this season on 99.3 The Lift.
