It can become a special part of someone’s life to support special Olympics. This year Area 39 with the Special Olympics of Michigan, serving Baraga, Gogebic, Houghton Keweenaw and Ontonagon counties, returns to provide athletic opportunities to the western upper peninsula’s children and adults with intellectual disabilities. To support the region’s teams Area 39 Organizers need coaches for a variety of sports this winter. Some of the sports special Olympics athletes will compete in include snowshoe, cross country skiing, and basketball. Practices are typically held around areas of Ironwood or Houghton. Most often happening on Saturdays. Volunteers can register easily online to coach a sport or support an event during the season. Those interested in volunteering with Special Olympics of Michigan Area 30 teams this winter can learn more about programs online and registering as a coach.
