- Forest Park fell 2-0 (25-22, 25-20) to the host Eskymoes in the championship game at the Escanaba Invitational. The Trojans advanced to the title game by sweeping Ishpeming (27-25, 25-13), Sault Sainte Marie (25-17, 25-18), Bark River-Harris (25-14, 25-13), and Cheboygan (25-19, 25-13).

College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team upended eighth-ranked Minnesota 5-3 Saturday. The Huskies overcame an early 3-1 deficit to give new head coach Bill Muckalt his first win with the team. Tyler Miller and Luca Fasciano scored for Tech in the first period. Teydon Trembecky tied the contest late in the second period, and Max Koskipirtti netted the game-winner less than a minute later. Noah Reinhart sealed the win with a late empty-netter. The Tech defense held the Golden Gophers to just 13 shots on goalie Owen Bartoszkiewicz.
Northern Michigan’s hockey team opened its season with a 5-3 loss at the University of Massachusetts. Wildcats goaltender William Gramme made 65 saves – the most in NMU history, and second-most in the modern NCAA era. Those two teams play again today in Amherst.
College Volleyball
The Michigan Tech volleyball team earned its fourth straight win with a 3-0 (28-26, 25-19, 25-18) sweep at Saginaw Valley State on Saturday. Rachel Zurek had 15 kills, and Maddie Torola added 9. Tess Hayes recorded 36 assists, and Julia Fledderjohn had 11 digs.
The Northern Michigan volleyball squad dispatched Lake Superior State 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-11) Saturday. McKenzie Gruner had 16 kills.
College Soccer
The MTU women’s soccer team will host Ferris State today at noon.
The NMU women’s soccer team welcomes Saginaw Valley State today at noon.
The NMU men’s team plays at St. Cloud State this afternoon.
College Football
The Michigan Tech football team bombed Wayne State 48-24 Saturday. The Huskies built a 14-point halftime lead, and held the Warriors scoreless in the second half. Alex Bueno completed 17 of 27 passes for 235 yards and a career-best four touchdowns – two to Nic Nora. Kolby Hindenach posted a career-high 84 yards rushing on 15 carries.
The Northern football team lost 47-25 at Saginaw Valley State Saturday. The Cardinals ran up a 40-3 lead, before the Wildcats scored their first touchdown late in the third quarter.
MLB
The Tigers claimed game one of their American League Divisional playoff series against the Mariners with a tense 3-2, 11-inning victory Saturday night. Kerry Carpenter homered. Zach McKinstry’s broken-bat single in the top of the 11th drove home Spencer Torkelson with the winning run. Starter Troy Melson allowed a run over four innings, and seven Detroit relievers combined to hold Seattle to just four hits over the duration.
That series continues tonight in Seattle. Tarik Skubal will start against Luis Castillo. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, coverage will begin at 7:40 on KBear 102.3.
Cole Keith returned to the Tigers’ line-up yesterday, after missing two weeks with strained rib cage muscle.
The Blue Jays wiped out the Yankees 10-1 in their ALDS opener yesterday. That set continues in Toronto today.
The Brewers pounded the Cubs 9-3 in their National League Divisional Series opener Saturday. Chicago starter Matthew Boyd, starting on short rest, didn’t make it through the first inning, as Milwaukee batters pounded him for six runs. Freddy Peralta pitched into the sixth, gave up two runs, and struck out 9. Jackson Chourio had three hits and drove in three runs – all in the first two innings. He left the game after his final hit with tightness in a hamstring, and his status for today’s game is uncertain.
That set continues in Milwaukee tonight. Neither team has announced a starter.
The Dodgers stunned the Phillies 5-3 in the other National League Divisional game Saturday evening. That series continues in Phialdelphia today.
NHL
Dylan Larkin’s overtime goal gave the Red Wings a 6-5 victory over the Maple Leafs in a preseason contest Saturday night. It was his second goal of the evening. Michael Brandsegg-Nygård also scored twice. John Gibson stopped 20 shots.
The Wings open the regular season Thursday night at home against the Canadiens.
NFL
The Lions visit the Bengals for a 4:25 game today, with coverage on 99.3 The Lift.
The Vikings meet the Browns this morning in England. Pregame begins at 9:15 on 99.3 The Lift. In tonight’s game, the Patriots visit the Bills. Coverage on 99.3 The Lift will start at 7:30.
